Flexible warmth where you need it

The Bio Green heating mats are ready-to-use heating mats with thermostatic temperature control in the range 5 - 40 °C. Available in a wide range of sizes.

The heating mats are designed to produce a maximum soil temperature of 35°C.

The Bio Green heating mat will bring you more success in growing from seed and propagating plants from cuttings. This is because the heat that is generated is directed to exactly where it is needed, namely in the soil, near the plant's roots.

The heat output is accurately calculated so that the Bio Green heating mat guarantees optimum heat distribution in the soil, whether in propagators or plant pots, and encourages the growth of roots and seedling with no significant drops in temperature

Possible uses
Along with many other applications, heating mats can be used when growing from seeds or cuttings in a seedbed or propagator, on shelves or on the bench, in greenhouses and conservatories and even in the living room. They are also ideal for use as ground heating, e.g. for over-wintering plants in a small area.

The structure of a Bio Green heating mat
The actual heating element consists of a special resistor cable with several layers of protection and a coated safety cover which is stitched, at a safe distance from the loops of cable, to a plastic sheet.

The thermostat with remote temperature sensor
A very important part of the Bio Green heating mat is the thermostat with remote temperature sensor. This sensor is carefully inserted in the root area of the soil being used for propagation or over-wintering. It then maintains the temperature which has been set on the thermostat. It can be set to suit the type of plant you are growing, within a range from 0 to 40 °C.

Heat distribution over the Bio Green heating mat
The Bio Green heating mat guarantees even heat distribution over its whole area. The heat output is calculated depending on the size of the mat. Optimum heat distribution over the whole area is achieved by ensuring that the loops of the heating cable are exactly the right distance apart.

Bio Green Heating mats are supplied ready for use including thermostat and temperature sensor

Over-wintering of containerised plants on the storage heater principle in the greenhouse
The Bio Green heating mat is particularly suitable for over-wintering containerised plants. We recommend building a storage heater on the floor of the greenhouse. This can be done very easily:

  • Build a 10 cm high box of any size made of polystyrene panels, supported on the outside by soil
  • Spread the heating mat over the polystyrene and fill it with a layer of sand about 5-10 cm deep
  • Cover the whole thing with a black sheet or a sheet of glass or Plexiglas (not insulating glass), painted black, and seal as well as possible
  • Inside this sand box, which is insulated below and covered on top, the sun's heat will be stored for the cold night hours
  • On dull days the thermostatically controlled heating mat will provide the necessary warmth
  • This system is a storage heater which will normally still give off heat even if there is a power cut lasting more than a day
  • However, it is essential also to have a greenhouse heater to detect sudden cold spells.

Using a Bio Green heating mat to promote growth
The ready-to-use Bio Green heating mat is remarkably easy to install. It can be laid on the ground or on standard potting benches or shelves. Here we explain to you the 9 easy steps to successful growing:

  1. Put a sheet of polystyrene at least 3 cm thick under the entire heating mat to pre vent downwards heat loss.
  2. Spread the Bio Green heating mat over the polystyrene.
  3. Cover the complete heating mat with aluminium foil to optimise even heat distribution.
  4. Protect the aluminium foil by covering it with plastic sheeting, sand or even glass.
  5. Fit the thermostat and the sensor.
  6. Cover the Bio Green heating mat with plant, pots, seed-trays, etc.
  7. Insert the sensor in the soil to ensure that the temperature around the roots is maintained at the same level. This provides favourable conditions for rapid germination from seed and healthy growth from cuttings.
  8. Before the plants reach the replanting stage, the temperature in the bed should
    be reduced by 5 °C.
  9. 9.2-3 weeks before planting out, the Bio Green heating mat should be switched off altogether to harden the plants off.
