Alton Amateur Cedar Greenhouse

This is the greenhouse range that's been designed for cropping right the way through the winter months. It has full length glass panels and sloping sides to make the greatest possible use of the low-angled winter sun. It's economical to heat, too, because the Western Red Cedar is a most efficient thermal insulator.

Not that the Amateur is a 'Wintertime only' greenhouse. In fact it encompasses design features that put most other greenhouses in the shade when it comes to summertime use.

Take the ventilation system for example. Cedar greenhouses have Alton's unique Ventaccess sliding ventilators fitted to alternate bays. These, used in conjunction with the roof ventilation provide natural air movement around plants at ALL levels of the greenhouse. And, as their name suggests, they also give easy access from outside the greenhouse to plants grown underneath the staging.

Easy to erect ALTON AMATEUR GREENHOUSES are pre-treated and have a wide, sliding door and kerbless doorway for easy wheelbarrow access. This, together with the no- slam sliding door makes wheelbarrow access easy and means you can carry plants and armfuls of seed trays in or out without fear of tripping over a kerb or threshold. ALTON VENTACCESS

And, as their name suggests, they also give easy access from outside the greenhouse to plants grown underneath the staging.

ROOF VENTILATION

ALTON GREENHOUSES are famous for their superior ventilation. Greenhouse plants need natural air movement around their base or they become vulnerable to a disease called "Grey mould'. Alton's unique Ventaccess low-level ventilation works in conjunction with roof vents to provide healthy through ventilation at All levels of the greenhouse. This is far better than greenhouses with only roof vents because such an arrangement only provides air movement in the top half of the greenhouse.

FULL LENGTH GLAZING

Many greenhouses have small overlapped glazing panels which are difficult and dangerous to clean and which eventually form a slimy green deposit of algae in the glass overlap.

ALTON GREENHOUSES have full-length glazing panels giving maximum light transmission. They are held in place by Cedar glazing beads - so there's no putty to go brittle and fall out.
4mm toughened glass is now standard on all Alton greenhouses.

ALTON CONCRETE BASE KERBS

All ALTON GREENHOUSES are designed for erecting with 5' 13crn high perimeter concrete base kerbs between the ground and the bottom of the timber frame. Our purpose-designed sectional concrete base provides a really solid, attractive and economical way of doing this.

The site for the greenhouse should be perfectly flat and level and it is essential that the ground is well compacted to support the weight of the building. If the ground is soft or loose it is important to lay a perimeter concrete foundation onto which the base kerbs can be positioned.

ALTON INTERNAL PARTITION

Internal partitioning allows you to keep different parts of the greenhouse at different temperatures for hot/cool house versatility. It is available for the Amateur 8'0" 2.43m and 10'0' 3.20m wide models only.

ALTON DOUBLE DOOR

An alternative available only on the 10' 3.20m wide Amateur greenhouse, which provides an enormous opening 4'4' 1.32m wide - ideal for wheelchair access.
