Alton Traditional Cedar Greenhouses

Nobody has more experience of greenhouses - or the needs of discerning greenhouse gardeners - than Alton. It shows in every model in our range, in sensible, practical design ideas, quality materials and really solid construction. Experts like television gardener Arthur Billitt, who for many years used ALTON GREENHOUSES at Clacks Farm, and Geoff Hamilton, who did likewise at Barnsdale. Central Television chose Alton for their 'Gardening Time' programme and for the Bob Price Memorial Garden. More recently Alton has again been chosen by Gardeners World for the Alpine house at Berryfields.

The Alton was Britain's very first greenhouse specially designed for the domestic market back in 1921. The modern Alton has a pedigree stretching back more than 75 years and has earned itself a reputation for innovative design, robust construction and outstanding durability. That's why Alton is the No.1 choice with gardening connoisseurs. You only have to talk to gardening club members, read the gardening press or watch the television gardening programmes to see what we mean.

Alton superior design features include an easy-glide sliding door (kerbless for easy wheelbarrow access), pre-glazed puttyless lights, sturdy guttering and downpipes and a unique ventilation system which discourages the common plant disease grey mould. We think you will agree - that is more than the average greenhouse has to offer.

Ten Year Guarantee
ALTON GREENHOUSES are manufactured from the finest Canadian Western Red Cedar - a managed and replanted natural resource. If any part of the Cedar framework rots or decays within TEN YEARS of purchase, Alton will replace it promptly and free of charge.

The superiority of ALTON GREENHOUSES has been proven by independent tests. Growing conditions and fuel usage were compared with a similarly proportioned aluminium greenhouse over 12 months. The results showed that the Alton produced a far better growing environment which produced heavier cropping. It was also shown that watering requirements were less frequent in an Alton, and that plants grew healthier compared with the reported leaf curl and mould found in the aluminium greenhouse.

Over a year the aluminium cost 18% more to heat because Cedar warms up more quicker in the day time and cools slower at night than aluminium. Appreciable results for the discerning gardener and proof indeed of the - superiority of ALTON GREENHOUSES.

Cedar is the ideal material for building ALTON GREENHOUSES, The warm, natural reddish- The cedar construction ALTON GREENHOUSES are all factory treated by total immersion in Cuprinol prior to delivery. Alton 10 year frame guarantee does not require you to re-treat the greenhouse.

Unlike ordinary greenhouses, which constantly need repairing and protecting from the influences of the British climate, Alton Cedar has an inherent resistance to rot. Alton selects only the best Western Red Cedar - the Alton specification is more demanding even than that acceptable for manufacturing the highest quality conservatories.

Western Red Cedar is an intrinsically expensive material, and because Alton only accepts the "Grade 2 and Better Clears' much of the cedar imported is simply not good enough for an Alton. If you wish to preserve the colour, you may retreat it every few years. If you do not do so, the cedar will gradually fade to its natural and attractive silvery appearance.

All greenhouses should be erected with a perimeter plinth between the bottom of the frame and ground. Alton provide purpose-designed kerbs in precast concrete sections. They are robust, attractive and impervious to frost and water. Each has built-in anchorage points ready for bolting the greenhouse firmly down into place.

Many greenhouses have small overlapped glazing panels which are difficult and dangerous to clean and which eventually form a slimy green deposit of algae in the glass overlap. ALTON GREENHOUSES have full-length glazing panels giving maximum light transmission. They are held in place by Cedar glazing beads - so there's no putty to go brittle and fall out. 4mm toughened glass is now standard on all Alton greenhouse models.

Choosing and Siting

Made in Western Red Cedar, ALTON GREENHOUSES are stronger than most aluminium, give better heat retention and are far more resistant to wind damage. In addition, all our Cedar is pre-treated in Cuprinol wood preserver to ensure minimum maintenance and long life.

What Size?
Always buy the biggest greenhouse that space and finances will allow. If garden space is limited you might consider a 'Lean-to' greenhouse sited against a sunny wall. Also bear in mind that it's better to go for maximum width rather than length because ALTON GREENHOUSES can be increased in length at a later date using extension modules.

What Base?
ALTON GREENHOUSES are designed for erecting on purpose-designed 5"11 3cm high perimeter concrete base kerbs. They are easy to install and have integral anchorage points for securely bolting down the greenhouse frame. These base kerbs are more economical and far more convenient than building a brick plinth. The site for the greenhouse should be perfectly flat and level and it is essential that the ground is well compacted to support the weight of the building. If the ground is soft or loose it is important to lay a perimeter concrete foundation onto which the base kerbs can be positioned.

What about Siting?
The most convenient position is normally as near to your house as possible without failing within its shadow. Avoid siting near trees, in the shadow of buildings, walls, etc., or in extremely exposed positions. Ideally, you should site a free-standing east to west as this gives better light penetration in the winter when the sun is low in the sky. A lean-to greenhouse should ideally be sited against a south facing wall.

The ease with which an ALTONGREENHOUSE can be erected makes choosing an ALTONGREENHOUSE even simpler. Prepare a level base and the greenhouse will be delivered in easy 'put together' kit form. Most major sections are pre-assembled and ready glazed.
